This is a handmade shoe horn made of buffalo horn from Central Java. Each shoehorn is different, as this natural substance has unique markings. This one is particularly beautiful with its contrasting tones!

Beautifully made, these smooth shoehorns look exquisite as well as being functional. How much easier is it getting shoes on with one of these! (Shoes' heels also last longer!) They look beautiful just hanging around in the hall or bedroom, and also make a wonderful gift for others.

This smaller shoe horn measures approx: 17.5 cm (6 1/2") in length x 4.1 cm (1 2/3") in width down the shoe end, and weighing 27 gms. This size is great for traveling as well as for home use. They are made from water buffalo horn, but these animals are not hunted for their horns, they are a common domestic animal in Java, where nothing is ever wasted!

This product is made in Magelang, a little town north of Yogyakarta. We buy direct from the makers as we used to live there and have many family connections – resulting in fantastic prices for you!

Lovely hand carved turtle wooden Hair Pin!

Measures: 3.1 cm (1 1/4 '') wide (at top) x 17.5 cm ( 7'') long

This is a hand carved hairpin from Tampaksiring, Bali.

Beautifully made, this decorative hairpin looks very pretty on. The natural wood is variagated in colour. Each pin is quite unique! They give a beautiful touch to your long hair when it is pinned up (see my Guides for bun ideas, especially the second one which suits this style), and also make a wonderful gift for others.

This double pronged pin measures approx 3.1 cm in width at the end and 17.5 cm in length (usable length is 12 cm), weighing approx 7 gm. It is made from Sono wood, a sustainable and durable hard wood which holds up well in moving to dry colder climates, and has beautiful markings. It is much more common than other tropical hardwoods of comparable beauty - some of which have been sadly overused and now have become rare. These are listed as multiple items, so they may differ slightly, being hand carved from a natural material.

This product is made in Tampaksiring, a little town in the centre of Bali. We first spotted these lovely hairpins in Yogyakarta and bought some there, and by an amazing coincidence we met the maker while travelling home via Bali. We buy direct from the maker – resulting in fantastic prices for you!

Exquisite handmade small size Javanese Mask with bird!

Measures: 13.5 cm (5 1/3”) high x 10 cm (4 ”) wide

Made from : wood, hand carved and batik decorated

This is a hand carved mask from Central Java. It is decorated by the batik technique – wax resistance dyeing. You may be familiar with batik cloths, and this is the same process applied directly on to the wood, a new variation of Batik Art started in 1989. This batik design has typical traditional motifs used in clothing. Each dot is hand dotted – it is a meticulous, very labour intensive and very beautiful art form. (Included are some photos of part of the carving and also the wax 'writing' part of the pre-dyeing process. If you'd like to know more about traditional batik, please press the link.)

Beautifully made, this decorative mask looks fantastic up on the wall. Just perfect for those with Eastern influenced décor or those who just love masks … And also make a wonderful gift for others.

The mask is a small size: 11 cm in height x 9 cm in width (at the widest point). It has a string loop attached to the rear inside which just needs a nail or hook to hang on! It is rather light, weighing 51 g, as it is made of a light wood the Javanese call "Pole" (pron: polei) wood, a little bit like our Balsa wood. (Unfortunately there are no hard woods left on the island of Java, the most densely populated place on this Earth ...)

This is a hand made barrette from Bali.

Beautifully made, this decorative barrette looks exquisite as well as being functional. The twin turtle design is gorgeous, like two little hearts ajoined! The natural coconut shell is variegated in colour and hand carved! A lovely pin for those who like unusual natural things, and they also make a wonderful gift for others.

The hairpin measures 6 cm high x 9.7 cm long, the pin 12.1 cm long and weighs 10 gms. It is made from coconut shell, a wonderful and very useful and prolific natural resource in both Java and Bali!

This product is made in Tegalalang, a little town in the centre of Bali near Ubud.
